Closet Cleanin'

Well, well, well...months and months ago I was working in earnest to clean out some of the years of junk accumulating in my closets, when I came across a number of rolls of undeveloped 35mm film. (Oh, remember the days?!) Lo and behold, at least one of the rolls contained a bevvy of photos from an old NSRA show I'd been to in PA. Joy!

Fast forward to now, when I'm sick as a dog at home, trying to keep my mind off my throbbing throat and numbing my brain with a little website maintenance, when I realize that HEY NOW...I never posted those old photos to my website.

...voila! I mustered up my last bit of energy for the evening to provide you with some "vintage" Garage goodies. Click the image above to head over to our RODS page and open up the NSRA '00 photo gallery.

Rumblers NYC 10th Annual show - THIS WEEKEND

It's that time again, kiddos, for those of us in the NYC area to get our fill of flames, open exhaust pipes and slap bass at the 10th Annual Kustom Kills & Hot Rod Thrills show under the BQE, right near Union Pool.

Rumblers 2010 Kustom Kills and Hot Rod Thrills

It's only $10 to see the bands over at Union Pool, including my ol' friend Bobcat's band the Arkhams, Al & the Black Cats, Labretta Suede and the Motel 6, Rehab for Quitters, and Those Hated Hearts. I've never heard of any of those other bands, but I'm always up for good music, and have yet to be disappointed at a Rumblers show. I also have no idea what the band schedule is, as I can't find the info anywhere (the Rumblers always seem a little disorganized when it comes to promoting their yearly show, but whatever). They also have a Facebook page now, which might have more info as the week goes on. Union Pool doesn't even have a real website yet (no surprise there), and neither their Myspace page or their new blog say anything about this event either. Oh silly, lazy hipsters.

See you fools there!

BrandX Photos on Flickr

Having once again missed out on a great day of vehicular mayhem somewhere in a ten mile radius of my house, I turned to Flickr to see if maybe some other like-minded soul was smart enough to get some photos of this shouldn't-have-been-missed 'cycle show. Success!

Indian Larry trailer shot via Jamie Boud on Flickr.

As you can see, I was completely wrong about what I send in my last entry about this show, regarding bikers scaring away rogue wanna-be hipsters. Of course, at some point the bedbugs and cockroaches end up taking over everything and there's nothing you can do but try your best to exterminate them...or move.

Check out Jamie's BrandX Flickr set for more great shots of a few of the bikes at the show. And next Saturday is the Rumblers Kustom Kills & Hot Rod Thrills show under the BQE in Williamsburg (hipsters beware).

For more info read my old post about it, visit the Rumbler's Site or visit Union Pool's Myspace for exact band times.

Upcoming Events: 6th Annual Exhibition of Vintage Motorcycles - Williamsburg, Brooklyn - Sun. Aug. 23rd

My custom bike-building friend Peter sent me this just now and I'm rarin' to go. The 6th Annual Exhibition of Vintage Motorcycles, "Brand X", is being held this Sunday, August 23rd @ Works Engineering 168 N. 14th Street Near Wythe Ave in Brooklyn in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. I'm pretty sure I've stumbled onto this show before back when I lived and worked in Williamsburg, and although I have no clue what happened to the photos I can tell you it was an insanely great showing of two wheeled power, technique and creativity. Best of all, the bike crowd is scary and angry enough to keep most of the curious hipster trash away.

The show is from 10am to 6pm with plenty of booze, BBQ and bands to keep your Sunday rollin'. Be there!

ROD-A-DAY: Goodguys Columbus brings the drag ass

Now, I've seen a lot of radical channeling on rad rods, but this is just crazy. Can you even drive the damn thing? Who knows, and also, that's not the point. The point is that this spark-generating, road rash of a ride is pretty sick.

Look at you, Ohio. Who knew you had it in ya?

ROD-A-DAY: Hot Custom Ford in Florida

I hate street rod paint jobs. HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE. Fifty-somethings with absolutely no color-theory knowledge shouldn't be allowed to choose finish colors for their cars. The horrifying results are usually enough to send me into vomiting epileptic seizures as they race by (and by "race", I mean cruise by at 25 miles per hour, because that's "racing" when you're 50 and own a light peach pink, fiberglass body '32 ford with a weird, airbrushed checkered-flag stripe zig-zagging all over the side of your ride). Case in point, see massacre below.

Dear lord.

But today's rod of the day, while utilizing some seriously sherbet-inspired standard street rod colors, is far from vom-inducing. Behold - the custom '49-50 ford that candy coated dreams are made of...

From the Titus Nights car show in Titusville, FL, taken by Keith, found on Flickr.

Basically, what it comes down to for me is that basically when you're in Florida, shit like this can be let to slide.

And yes, yes...I realize that my "Rod-A-Day" posts are probably disappointing you on many levels, firstly because they are obviously not happening every day and secondly because they are so heavy with shoebox Fords. Especially scalloped shoebox Fords. I swear I'm going to try and mix it up. SWEAR!

UPDATE MADNESS!!!

Madness? Really? Ok, so it might not be much, depending on your definition of madness, but I updated the site with a bunch of new images today. Actually, the sad part of technology is that what took me an entire day to do (scanning, photoshopping and uploading old 35mm photos) will take you a fraction of an hour to look at. ...I'm going to try not to think about it.

First, I finally got all the images I took at the KKOA show back in June together and posted for you to check out both below and on the RODS page. (I'm still working on all the captions, so cool yer jets.)

Kustom Kemps of America Sled Scene East 2009

Want more? Well aren't you in luck! A few weeks ago I found three rolls of undeveloped film while I was cleaning up the house, so I got them developed and a week later (that's how long it takes the drug store to process film these days), voila! Turns out two of them were photos from the NSRA East show at the York Fairgrounds in York, PA from either 2000 or 2001, I can't really tell which.

A few selected images from the set.

Again, if you're interested, you can check them all out in their own set on Flickr until they are all here on the site, in one neat and tidy little place. I've been having some trouble deciding if I should just give up making individual pages for all these car show photos and just link solely to the Flickr set, but really, there's something kinda special about having all your web content in one place to look at. Makes shit easier, right? Probably.

I'm starting to realize why I had neglected this website for such a long time previously; having a full-time job (or I should say, being one of the lucky people I know who still has a full-time job) is really cutting into my "being productive in other more exciting areas of my life" time. Yeesh. I'm going to do my best to keep this stuff coming and still get at least four hours of sleep a night so, enjoy it while you can!

ROD-A-DAY:: Rumblers in Coney Island

1937 Chevy Pickup Rumblers Coney Island Show 2009
1937 Chevy pickup (I deduce) at a recent Rumblers show in Coney Island, which I missed (as usual).

HOT SLEDS IN THE SUMMER

The Rumblers Car Club of NYC will be having their 6th annual "Rumble in the Country" at the Terryville Fairgrounds in Terryville, Connecticut THIS SATURDAY, June 13th. Open to classic kustoms, hot rods and motorcycles, it's only $10/car to show off your damn hard machining & restoration work to the gasser-groveling public (pre-register by email at rumblersnomads@yahoo.com).

There will be bands, food and camping (on Friday night the 12th) so don't miss out. I won't be there because:
A) I can't ride my bike that far on a Friday night
B) The closest Metro North station is still almost two hours away, and
C) I will be back in PA for that particular weekend
...but that doesn't mean YOU shouldn't be.

Also, coming up quickly is the Goodguys East Coast Nats and swap meet in Rhinebeck, NY, at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, June 26th - 28th.

Register now for a weekend of stage shows, parties and gearhead goodness. You can register now online (closes at midnight, Friday, June 12th!) and after, there will be registration at the Fairgrounds themselves.
